Spanish, Spanish and more Spanish…..and Albies!

For most of us surfcasters, September means cooler air, cooler water and lots of predators in the surfzone. Over the past two weeks, the Crystal Coast has been ablaze with mullet, red anchovies, glass minnow and half-beaks offering a buffet to Spanish mackerel, bluefish, flounder, trout and the ultimate disruption false albacore bring to the table.

Over the past week especially, the 3/4, 1  and 1.5 oz chrome Gunslinger has been the go-to jig. The 1/2 oz has proven to be deadly as well, just keep your retrieve speed high to at least prevent being cutoff every cast. The other hot colors and sizes over the past 2 weeks have been the 1.5 blue/silver, 1.5 and 3/4 clown, 1.5 gold and the 1.5 copper has been absolutely deadly in the evening.

For the most part, weather cooperating, you can expect to see false albacore making an appearance. Advice from someone who has chased them around up and down the beach, just slow down and remember that when you run to follow them, another is going to show up in the area you just left. Happens all of the time.

Spanish fishing has been so good that limits are being logged in 30 minutes–or less!
