High winds and dirty water has dampened surfcasting. I took a look on July 29 and found some decently clean water on the inlet side of Fort Macon. Once the water clears, expect a good morning and evening bite with Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish. We are just a few weeks away from September, when the Spanish bite really takes a turn for the better. Expect to see pods of False Albacore in the morning and late afternoons around Atlantic Beach, especially on days with predominately north winds or light south winds. For the past three years, I have caught at least one False Albacore during the first week of September. Look outside the box also. Take advantage of the ferry from Beaufort to Shackleford Banks for great Spanish fishing. Great thing to look forward to in September is the Speckled Trout bite in the surf. They are aggressive and will hit metals similarly to Bluefish, just slow down the retrieve.
